"This to be Love, that your spirit to live in a natural holiness with the Beloved, and your bodies to be a sweet and natural delight that shall be never lost of a lovely mystery…. And shame to be unborn, and all things to go wholesome and proper, out of an utter greatness of understanding; and the Man to be an Hero and a Child before the Woman; and the Woman to be an Holy Light of the Spirit and an Utter Companion and in the same time a glad Possession unto the Man…. And this doth be Human Love…."
"…for this to be the especial glory of Love, that it doth make unto all Sweetness and Greatness, and doth be a fire burning all Littleness; so that did all in this world to have met The Beloved, then did Wantonness be dead, and there to grow Gladness and Charity, dancing in the years."
The Night Land[illustrated] eBook William Hope Hodgson
This is W.H. Hodgson's Night Land, one of the most impressive feats in English literature. Nothing is more imaginative than this, nothing. The ballyhoo'd illustrations were a let-down, but there's no holding back the story. If you have not read it, the NL is written in a very archaic style that resembles nothing else, really. Many find it excruciating, and sometimes it is, but that is also part of its charm. What is excruciating to the modern ear is the characterization of the Maid. Yow. But Hodgson's economy with language is a marvel, a writing class all to itself. He can say something in a deft sentence that would take me a paragraph of exposition. A work of genius.

The Night Land[illustrated] eBook William Hope Hodgson Reviews
This is a very weird tale; the setting is strange, the style is strange, the use of English is strange. Some people have called it unreadable, but I found it intriguing. This is a worthwhile read for people interested in early 20th century weird and fantastic fiction!
great book
